The hospital is founded in 2001 and works on clinical paths with the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) SINCE 2003.

MEDICAL TREATMENT OF OLD PEOPLE WITH FRACTURES?
YES, WE TREAT OLD PEOPLE!
Orthopaedic hospital “Vitosha” is specialized in the treatment of old people with fractures and as such it is unique in Bulgaria. Patients above the age of 75 are subject to an increased surgical risk, they need specific approach, modern intensive care and expensive treatment which makes them unwelcome in most of the other hospitals. We have great experience in the treatment of old people and the whole hospital structure is adapted for this purpose.
FREE MEDICAL TREATMENT! (FOR BULGARIAN PATIENTS)
Treatment in hospital “Vitosha” is absolutely free of charge, it is fully paid by the National Health Iinsurance Fund(NHIF).
NO CORRUPTION!
Unlike the other hospitals, there is no corruption here and no one will ask you for an extra payment for your treatment.
MATCHLESS LOW PRICES OF THE IMPLANTS!
When the surgical fixation of the fracture needs the use of metal implants (nails, screws, bone plates), these implants are fully paid by the patient in the other hospitals (according to the legal frame of the NHIF- National framework contract ‘2003-‘2008).
Due to the social program of hospital “Vitosha” the price you should pay for the implants used for your operation is 50% cheaper in comparison with all the other hospitals. The low price of the implants is due to the fact that the price is partially paid by hospital “Vitosha” and because our policy is to help to the highest degree.
SOCIAL PROGRAM!
Our social program is directed towards the assistance of lonely elderly patients and of patients in the lowest income bracket. The price of the implants for such people is symbolic or absolutely free of charge and is fully paid by “Vitosha” hospital. No other Bulgarian hospital offers social program like ours and we are proud of this.
SOCIAL SIGNIFICANCE OF GENERALLY ACCESSIBLE TREATMENT!
Patient with a femoral bone fracture must be immediately hospitalized!!! Our policy for diminishing the price of the implants (they are not paid by the NHIF but by the patient) helps us make the medical care in our hospital accessible for all. We consider as an act of crime the large-scale practice of other hospitals to refuse to operate elderly patients and send them home for “home treatment” just because of patient’s inability to pay the expensive implants needed for his operation.
For the patient with a femoral(hip) fracture, who is not operated and is sent for “home treatment”, the risks of lethal outcome is more than 50% in the next 3 months. Above this, the quality of the sick man’s life is extremely deteriorated – violent pain chains the patient to his bed , hygienic requirements are impossible or very difficult to obtain. Frequently, at the very beginning, decubitus appear on sick man’s back and waist.
Many of the sick people become victims of hypostatic pneumonia because of the long time inactivity of the fixed in bed patient , or of thromboembolic complications which frequently have fatal end.
In contrast to this, modern surgical treatment of femoral bone fracture (hip fracture) diminishes the risk of a lethal outcome to under 8% during the first 3 months. On the very first week after the operation the quality of life resembles that of a healthy man – the lack of pain makes possible moving and physiotherapy and diminishes the risks of complications due to the long time inactivity in bed. Also the patient’s relatives are not so tightly engaged in his sanitary service, which ,on the other hand, has great economic effect.
